Identifying The Signs Of Cat Illnesses

It is important to know whether your cat is suffering from any form of cat illness before the condition gets worse. As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. If you can detect the signs of cat illness early, then there is the greater likelihood of your cat getting well because of early intervention.

There are too many cat deaths due to cat sickness because the owners failed to notice the cat illness symptoms. Had the disease been detected earlier, these cats would still be alive and live much fuller lives.

Now, you don’t want this to happen to your beloved furball. You want your cat to live out its full lifespan as happy and as healthy as possible. Because you only want what’s best for your cat, you want to learn as much as you can about cat health and illnesses. That way, you will be able to identify the cat sickness symptoms and immediately bring your pet to a veterinarian for a cure.

Pay Close Attention To Your Cat

You will know when a man is not feeling well. Just by looking at his facial expression, which looks decidedly down or spaced out, or just by listening to him talk incessantly about his pain and what-not, you can instantly tell that the man is going through something bad.

Your cat, however, can’t talk. He or she does not have that many facial expressions either. Therefore, you need to pay close attention to your cat in order to identify the subtle and not so subtle signs of cat illness.

Often, the early warning signs are difficult to catch. So much so that by the time you do catch them, they are no longer early warning signs. This is the reason why you really need to pay attention to your cat.

Some of these signs may be behavioral. Physical manifestations of these signs are also possible, but more often than not, the symptoms are internal for the most part. Moreover, your cat’s body is covered entirely in fur so if there are indeed any physical signs appearing on the skin, they are obstructed from your view. Only when you take the time to examine your cat’s entire body will you be able to detect them.

Watch For Changes In Behavior

A sudden or drastic change in your cat’s behavior could be a warning sign that something is wrong. Of course, to identify a change in the first place, you also need to know beforehand what is normal and what is not for your cat. Therefore, you need to familiarize yourself with your cat’s behavioral idiosyncrasies beforehand.

Your cat that used to be very friendly suddenly becomes withdrawn and shy. Or your cat that did not used to drink so much suddenly finds itself very thirsty. Or your cat is scratching itself more often. Or your cat has lost its appetite. It is changes like this that you need to watch out for.

Now, of course, these things are susceptible of different interpretation. Who knows, maybe it is just hot inside the house and that is why your cat is frequently thirsty. Maybe the new cat food you gave your cat is not palatable to your cat’s tastebuds.

This is why they are only called warning signs because they could mean one thing or another, but they provide you a hint to pay much closer attention to your cat to see if the change goes away or worsens over time.

Watch For Changes In Appearance

Sometimes, common cat and kitten illnesses are detected by watching the appearance of a cat. For instance, a sudden weight gain or loss is very telling of some medical condition that your cat is suffering. Excessive hair shedding or dull coat are also important signs of a potential problem.

When you notice any of these changes in your cat and you can’t attribute it to anything besides a possible medical condition, then call your veterinarian at once and have him or her take a look at your cat.
